What to Do If Lightning Strikes Your Well
Help for Power Surges, Pump Damage, and Sudden Water Loss
Big storm roll through? Suddenly out of water?
It's not uncommon for homeowners to lose access to water due to electrical surges from nearby lightning strikes. At Summers Well Drilling, we help you diagnose the damage, repair or replace equipment, and restore water flow quickly.
Signs Lightning May Have Hit Your Well
In some cases, the damage is electrical. In others, it's mechanical failure due to a power surge damaging the pump motor or blowing out sensitive components.
What You Should Do First
Check your electrical panel
Look for tripped breakers or blown fuses related to your well pump circuit. Try resetting once, but don't keep flipping breakers - that can worsen pump damage.
Inspect any external control boxes or pressure switches
Look (and smell) for signs of burning, popping, or melting. Turn off the system if it looks damaged.
Call a licensed well technician
Electrical damage isn't always visible. We can test your pump, switch, wiring, and motor resistance to find out what failed, and whether it's fixable.
How We Can Help
If your pump was already old or near the end of its life, we can also upgrade it with a more efficient, surge-resistant system.
Lightning Insurance
In many cases, well pump damage from lightning is covered by homeowner's insurance. We can provide the inspection and documentation needed to support a claim.
